Όλοι οι δίσκοι βινυλίου φέρουν μια σειρά αριθμών, καμιά φορά και γραμμάτων, στον κενό δακτύλιο ανάμεσα στην ετικέτα και το κυρίως γραμμοφωνημένο μέρος. Η σειρά αυτή που μόλις φαίνεται δίνει τα στοιχεία της παρτίδας που κόπηκε. Μερικές φορές είναι χαραγμένη με το χέρι και σπανιότερα αναφέρει και το όνομα της εταιρείας. Στα αγγλικά λέγονται matrix numbers.

Από τα τέλη του '60 διάφορα συγκροτήματα πρόσεξαν αυτή τη λεπτομέρεια και άρχισαν να τυπώνουν μικρά "κρυφά" μηνύματα. Τα περισσότερα εμφανίζονται σε εφτάϊντσα, συλλογές και bootleg.

Έχουν πολύ ενδιαφέρον αυτά τα matrix μηνύματα. Σίγουρα τα διαλέγανε πρόχειρα ή την τελευταία στιγμή πάνω από την πρέσα, γι' αυτό και αντικατοπτρίζουν την πραγματική φύση του κάθε γκρουπ, πολλές φορές και τη μουσική τους. Για παράδειγμα οι Husker Du με τα αργόσυρτα κομμάτια τους είναι οι πιο φλύαροι σ' αυτά τα μηνυματάκια.

Οι Smiths είναι οι πρωταθλητές του είδους. Τα πιο αιχμηρά είναι των Dead Kennedys "Η εξουσία είναι το καλύτερο αφροδισιακό- Χένρι Κίσσινγκερ" και "Η ζωή σου είναι τόσο βαρετή όσο εσύ;" Οι Iron Maiden γράφουν διάφορα ανούσια. Πιο ευρηματικοί οι Clash, στο διπλό London Calling έγραψαν Tear Down The Walls (Ρίξε τα Τείχη), κάθε λέξη σε κάθε πλευρά.

Φυσικά οι Butthole Surfers είναι οι πιο χυδαίοι... "69 with your mama in a boat". Οι Nirvana έχουν τη λιγότερη φαντασία, λένε στη μια πλευρά του δίσκου "κενό". Οι Joy Division χρησιμοποιούν με αλληγορικό τρόπο στίχο από τραγούδι τους "This is the way/step inside". Τα hard rock συγκροτήματα γράφουν αφιερώσεις. Των μεταλλάδων είναι πιο ναρκισσιστικά.
